$6.95
sold out

Seeds, Red and Yellow, Attracts Pollinators, Zones 3-9, Symbolize Romance, Sun

One packet containing 100 seeds of Red Halo Hollyhock (Alcea rosea). The seeds were collected fresh in the fall of 2024 and packaged for planting in 2025.

The Red Halo Hollyhock is a biennial or short-lived perennial that readily reseeds and thrives in USDA hardiness zones 3-9. Its large, single, bright red flowers with yellow centers are funnel-shaped and bloom in the summer on long, erect spikes from July through September. The hollyhock exudes Old-World charm and symbolizes love and romance. Its sweet scent makes it a favorite among flower growers.

The rich nectar and pollen of the Red Halo Hollyhock attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Additionally, it serves as a host plant for painted butterfly caterpillars. This plant requires full sun and rich, well-drained soil. It typically reaches a height of 4-6 feet and has a spread of 18-24 inches, making it an excellent choice for tall bouquets.

The leaves are lobed, rounded, and slightly fuzzy with a rough texture. In its first year, the plant produces a rosette of foliage; in the second year, it develops a tall stalk that blooms from the bottom up. The seed heads are flat, tan to brown pods that crack open to release dark brown seeds, which birds love. Hollyhocks reseed readily, and companion plants such as delphinium, yarrow, echinacea, and catmint pair nicely with them.

The seeds are tested for germination by the State of Wisconsin and packaged for 2025. Whittlesey Creek Wildflower Farm is a licensed nursery grower and seed labeler in Ashland Wisconsin, Bayfield County.
