Pack:

The Purple Cone Flower thrives in USDA Hardiness Zones 3-9 and is native to the Central to southeastern United States.

The Purple Cone Flower features single flowers atop stiff, long stems. The blooms are characterized by pinkish-purple drooping petals surrounding a domed, orangish-brown, spiny center cone. They typically bloom from July through September and have a slight fragrance.

This plant grows very well in sand, loam, and rich soils and tolerates clay.  Soil should be well-drained, but if it is too dry, leaves may wilt.

These vibrant flowers attract butterflies, bees, birds, hummingbirds, and other pollinators. Additionally, the purple coneflower serves as a host plant for the silvery checkerspot butterfly (Chlosyne nycteis). They provide nectar and pollen for various wildlife and are highly appealing in floral arrangements.

The purple coneflower prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade. It reaches a mature height of 3-4 feet and a spread of 2-4 feet.

Companion plants are black-eyed susan, grey-headed coneflower, anise hyssop, and asters.  Protect from deer and rabbits while the plant is young.
