Parasol Whitetop / Flat-topped White Aster (Doellingeria umbellata) Seeds

$6.95
sold out

Seeds, White Flower, Zones 3a–9b.

One packet of Parasol Whitetop / Flat-topped White Aster (Doellingeria umbellata) containing 400 seeds. These seeds were collected fresh in the fall of 2024 and packaged for 2025.

Parasol Whitetop features clusters of starry, white, daisy-like flowers that encircle a central tuft of golden blooms atop long, rigid, upright stems. The flower heads are approximately 5-6 inches in diameter, consisting of 10-15 white petals that are tinged with purple and tend to curve downward.

These flowers bloom from July to October and are not fragrant. Their pollen and nectar are attractive to butterflies, long-tongued bees, short-tongued bees, wasps, flies, and beetles. They can also be added to fresh flower arrangements. Additionally, Parasol Whitetop serves as a host plant for the caterpillars of the Pearly Crescent and Harris Checkerspot butterflies.

This plant reaches a mature height of 2-5 feet and has a spread of around 24 inches. It prefers moist to occasionally wet sandy loam or clay soils and is hardy in zones 3a-9b.

The leaves are alternate and entire, measuring about 3-6 inches long and 1 inch wide, and have a lance-shaped appearance. The stems are rigid and unbranched and can appear reddish to greenish-yellow. Parasol Whitetop is deer-resistant, and good companion plants include Joe Pye weed, switchgrass, boneset, and red cardinal flower.

The seeds are tested for germination by the State of Wisconsin and packaged for 2025. Whittlesey Creek Wildflower Farm is a licensed nursery grower and seed labeler in Ashland Wisconsin, Bayfield County.
