This listing is for one packet of Large-Flowered Beardtongue (Penstemon grandiflorus), containing 100 seeds.
Large-Flowered Beardtongue (Penstemon grandiflorus) is a perennial wildflower that is hardy in zones 3-8 and is native to Eastern North America, specifically the dry prairies of Wisconsin.
This striking plant features large, pink-purple flowers that are 2 inches long and tubular in shape. Each flower is five-lobed and contains four stamens, two located in the upper portion and two in the lower portion. This arrangement is designed to enhance the likelihood of pollen grains adhering to the hairs on visiting insects. The flowers bloom in May and June and are not fragrant. The purple streaks within the throat of the flower serve as nectar guides for pollinating insects. In addition to being an attractive cut flower, it draws a variety of pollinators, including bees, birds, hummingbirds, long-tongued pollinators, butterflies, and beetles.
The Large-Flowered Beardtongue serves as a host plant for the chalcedon checkerspot (Euphydryas chalcedona) and edith’s checkerspot (Euphydryas editha) butterflies. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and has a mature height of 1-3 feet with a spread of 1-2 feet. This plant prefers sandy or gravelly soils, does well in poor soils, and will not grow in clay. It requires dry soil and good drainage, and it is drought-tolerant.
The foliage is silvery blue, featuring entire, opposite leaves that are thick and clasp the stem. The leaves decrease in size as they ascend the stems. Several stems can emerge from the base, and these erect, unbranched stems are hairless and can be light green or purple-tinged.
The seed pod is a tear-shaped capsule measuring 1/2 inch to 1 inch long, which matures to a dark brown color and contains numerous small seeds. The plant has a fibrous root system.
Each purchase includes a fact sheet, flower photo, seeds, and planting instructions.
The seeds are tested for germination by the State of Wisconsin and packaged for 2026. Whittlesey Creek Wildflower Farm is a licensed nursery grower and seed labeler in Ashland WI, Bayfield County.
